Querying historical and contemporary relationships to trans-justice organizing, FREE OUR SIBLINGS///FREE OURSELVES investigates agency and self-actualization through trans-action. The subjects of these drawings weave together two distinct moments in time. Half of the subjects are rendered from documentation of the Christopher Street Liberation Day protests of early 1970s, including members of the vanguard tans-justice organization S.T.A.R. The other half of the subjects are contemporary organizers and protesters, continuing the struggle for trans-justice. Many of the contemporary figures are rendered from documentation of the annual Trans Day of Action from the late 2000s, to the early 2010s, an event organized by The Audre Lorde Project. FREE OUR SIBLINGS///FREE OURSELVES acknowledges the labor and love of the trans* and non-binary people who came before, giving thanks for the path that they blazed for us and carrying their vision forward. Through the shared staging of New York City streets, an interwoven history of trans-action merges as a single, collective moment of self-actualization through resistance.
